oints are the key to the matter. There is still a question about their durability in arthroplasty. Thus, more than a million hip joint prostheses

are installed every year, of which dislocation occurs in 0.2-10%! of cases.

In the case of revision endoprosthetics, dislocation frequency

reaches 25-31%.

n the other hand one-piece systems lead to excessive wear of the friction pair, disruption of the connection between bone, implant and cement, leading to aseptic loosening and catastrophic failure of the component. None of the leading firms found a solution. However, we know how to fi   it.

y replicating soft tissue of the joint we’ll be able

to improve current prosthesis and robotic joints.

For that, we’ll need to “create” our own

hip joint with:

•Acetabular lip and synovial fluid

•Internal ligament (ligamentum teres)

•External ligaments and capsule

n other words, flexible parts will be responsible for (A) reducing friction, (B) protection against external damages, (C) prevention of dislocation. To test our hypothesis quadruped robot will be made, that has joints with artificial ligaments.

ur team has been studying the biomechanics of the hip joint, taking into account the ligamentous apparatus, for more than 30 years.

As a result of the research, a series of mechanical models were created to demonstrate and study the ligaments of the hip joint, two test benches, as well as two quadruped robot concepts with biomorphic hinges.

PROJECT
RESEARCH

t the moment, in the materials of applications for inventions, we have described 21 design options for a hip joint endoprosthesis with a capsular-ligamentous apparatus. Several prototypes of a hip joint endoprosthesis with artificial ligaments were manufactured in the laboratory. This confirmed the possibility of practical implementation of the artificial joints with flexible elements that we are developing.

lexibility, the word that we believe will change prosthetics industry and robotics. There are still no hip joint endoprostheses with ligament analogues on the market. That means no flexible elements are usedin hip joints prosthetics. Introducing them for people and robots in joints will make a big difference.

This difference will include:

F

fficiency

Lower long-term costs for patients and robots.

urability

Uniform wear of the friction pair.
